Which Deal Makes Sense? Let’s Justify It.
Abstract Purple Shapes

Shop Offers

Shop 1: Buy 2 Get 1 Free

Shop 2: Up to 35% discount

Shop 3:  33â…“% off on all purchases

Your Task

work in a small group

Step 1- Understand the offers: As a group, discuss:

  • What does each offer mean mathematically?

  • What is guaranteed?

  • What is not guaranteed?

Step 2 - Decide and justify: For the basket of 3 items at €12 each:

  1. Which shop gives the best deal?

  2. Are any deals the same?

  3. Which offer is least clear?

You must justify your decisions using numbers or calculations, words, a diagram or table (if helpful). A correct answer without explanation is not enough.

Step 3 - Challenge the advertising

Choose one statement below and explain whether it is always true, sometimes true, or never true:

  1. “Buy 2 Get 1 Free is the same as 33â…“% off.”

  2. “Up to 35% off means you will save 35%.”

  3. “Percent discounts are always clearer than offers like Buy 2 Get 1 Free.”

Explain your reasoning clearly. Show how you know your answer would still make sense if the price changed.”

Step 4 - Be ready to defend your thinking

Be ready to explain why your reasoning works and how you would convince someone who disagrees.
