10th Science and Maths Education Research Conference
The Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) hosted the 10th Science and Maths Education Research Conference 2024 “Beyond Boundaries – Future-proofing Science, Maths, Technology and Engineering Education”.
At this conference, the Mathscify team hosted a symposium entitled “Priorities for the Assessment of Mathematics and Science Skills: Developing a Shared Understanding”.
Elizabeth Oldham kick-started the symposium by giving a wonderful background, not only to our project, but to the historical significance of assessing key skills in mathematics and science.
Miriam Ryan spotlighted the importance of supporting Irish Medium Education in mathematics and science in particular in light of the new Primary Mathematics Curriculum in Ireland and related issues to the Irish-medium sector.
As for next steps, Lorraine was delighted to launch Measeolmata.
MeasEolMata, stands for Measúnú (assessment), Eolaíocht (science), and Mata (mathematics). The research team will explore what the current understandings, practices, and priorities of primary teachers in their assessment of mathematical understanding are. They will further investigate how these established practices inform the development, implementation, and assessment of high-quality STEM activities, to allow for authentic and meaningful assessment of both Mathematics and Science learning through these activities.
You can read the abstract for the symposium on Zenodo pages 53 and 54 here.
